Sure, we set off to pick wild garlic to make some soup – but the real revelation of the day turned out to be the wild garlic bread! Stay tuned.... Here's Lukie and me foraging for the lovely leaves along the river walk in Grasmere (whose land is this? no clue, but it seems a pity to waste all that lovely green stuff!)

These are the ingredients for the soup...300 g of wild garlic leaves to 1 litre of chicken stock. In hindsight I'd leave out the parsley; you really want to focus on the pure subtlety of the wild garlic....

Ivan Day on BBC 2 |

There's a new series on BBC2 (on weekdays at 6.30 pm), called Royal Upstairs Downstairs. Essentially, antiques expert Tim Wonnacott and chef Rosemary Shrager travel in the
footsteps of Queen Victoria, visiting the houses, castles and stately
homes she visited throughout her life. Wouldn't normally be something I'd switch on to...but there's a hidden treasure in these programmes. Cooking what the queen would have eaten at each house/castle is our friend Ivan Day. There are seven episodes left (counting tonight, Mar 10). Watch it on iPlayer and fast-forward to Ivan's sections – that's my suggestion.
Here he is making a game pie in his historic kitchen, where some of the series was also shot.

"Today we are embracing the negative!" said Jane Hasell-McCosh when we arrived, in the rain, at Dalemain House for the Marmalade Award ceremony yesterday. And indeed, they did – nothing could have put a dampener on this amazing competition and the people involved in it.
The biggest star is Jane herself, who, over five years, has managed to create a food event with global impact!

I say global, because a considerable number of the 1100 entered jars had actually made their way to Dalemain across oceans and continents. New for this year was the Marmalashes, an Aussie challenge, which was reported thus by Sky News down under:
"England might have beaten us in the
Ashes but a team of Aussies is sa ...

There's No Taste Like Home... |

There's no taste like home is the working title of a new ITV cooking programme, and I have been whether I'd be interested in taking part. It's a celebration of home cooking, and participants (3 from each region) will cook their signature dish, preferably something with ties to the family/history...so naturally, being Swedish (and if I get on the programme), I will cook a Russian Leg of Lamb. We have no idea why it is called Russian, but it's delicious and I ate it all through my childhood. And of course, living in Cumbria I have the perfect produce on my doorstep – in this instance a fantastic leg of Herdwick lamb from Yew Tree Farm near Coniston. To find out more about Yew Tree Farm and its ethos, read some of Car ...

As part of the three-year package of support from RDPE to help develop the food and drink sector in Cumbria following the 2009 floods, a Food Tourism Summit will be held at Rheged on February 28 from 10.00 to 16.30. It's aimed at helping the county's food and tourism industries.
The summit is organised by the team behind Taste Cumbria (in Cockermouth last Sep), and this is how they describe the event:
"The Food Tourism Summit provides an opportunity to gain insight and share experiences, ultimately providing delegates with the right tools and tangible information for improved profitability. Inspiring industry heavyweights including Guardian critic Matthew Fort and broadcaster Jay Rayner will be debating and presenting subjects including: - How ‘keeping it local’ benefits Cumbrian businesses - Menu planning vs. the bottom line - Food and Tourism – how they help to sustain a regional economy
