There's a new series on BBC2 (on weekdays at 6.30 pm), called Royal Upstairs Downstairs. Essentially, antiques expert Tim Wonnacott and chef Rosemary Shrager travel in the footsteps of Queen Victoria, visiting the houses, castles and stately homes she visited throughout her life. Wouldn't normally be something I'd switch on to...but there's a hidden treasure in these programmes. Cooking what the queen would have eaten at each house/castle is our friend Ivan Day. There are seven episodes left (counting tonight, Mar 10). Watch it on iPlayer and fast-forward to Ivan's sections – that's my suggestion.

Here he is making a game pie in his historic kitchen, where some of the series was also shot.
